Deep Simplicityの追求 / The pursuit of Deep Simplicity

Hi everyone, I'm Eduardo, Managing Director and Design Leadership Executive at Accenture Song. There I co-lead Fjord Tokyo Studio and lead the Service & Experience Design team.

Fjord Tokyo launched in November 2019, intending to change how companies do business towards a purpose-driven and human-centred way, leveraging groundbreaking Japanese technology to deliver world-leading experiences. Since the launch, we have focused on designing products and services that create a positive human impact. We have successfully launched 23 projects to market and received 13 awards during 3 years.

In our journey and across many industries, we noticed a consistent trend of needs and expectations from customers, users and employees when we conducted our work. It became clear how complex people's lives are, the information overload that reaches people in every channel, the growing volume of decisions people need to make and the burden it imposes on their lives.

(出典: Roger E Bohn and James Short, Measuring Consumer Information (2012))
Complexity in our lives has been increasing over the past decades at an unprecedented pace. A 2012 study showed that on a daily basis, people in 2008 were exposed to 34GB of information through various devices and gadgets (such as TVs, computers, mobile phones, print media, etc.), and this statistic's growth is accelerating.  (Source: Roger E Bohn and James Short, Measuring Consumer Information (2012))

This research data is over 10 years old, so it doesn't consider the evolution of the touchpoints we have experienced with smartphones becoming commonly available and new touchpoints such as smart speakers, smart watches and beyond. When considering these new factors, it is evident they contributed to creating a cluttered and noisy life with an ever-growing high volume of information constantly delivered and subsequent decisions to pay attention or not be required more frequently.

This noise is an example of the complexity tax people experience in their lives, alongside other factors such as disconnected journeys and systems, rapid technological changes and beyond. All contribute to the feeling that living is progressively more complicated and daily tasks require more effort to complete.

We observe this complexity tax in the users, customers and employees' lives when we create experiences. This tax appears in our research, in the reaction to prototypes and experiences and the feedback when services are launched to market. Carefully designing brands, products and services so that we can reduce this complexity tax has progressively become part of our pursuits. We now constantly set out to create beautiful, delightful, usable experiences and simplify people's lives. We call this the pursuit of Deep Simplicity. We accomplish that by using a deep level of craft from our design practices and elegant, simple and intuitive qualities when creating our output.

Deep Simplicity is - in our opinion - the next chapter to create meaningful impact by practicing design. It requires alignment across all elements in an experience and organization to simplify what reaches the people and the effect it makes in their lives. It directly addresses misalignment within organizations that lead to the creation of complex products and services, and we have all experience it. It involves applying design skills to various organizational priorities, and stakeholder needs to align and focus on the positive impact that can be created when unlocking new and simpler experiences for their audiences.

Our team has been on this journey crafting examples across multiple industries where design played a role beyond the touchpoints and inside businesses. Across financial services, retail, telecommunications and beauty, we have set ourselves to simplify people's lives with elegant, well crafted and intuitive experiences.

Over the past months, we have looked back and evolved our ways of working, team structure and many aspects of our team to further focus on positively impacting Japanese society and the world with the power of Deep Simplicity.

This journey leads us to this moment when we let go of the Fjord brand and its successful legacy of creating human impact to embrace our next step as Accenture Song Design. Our mission is to create impact through Deep Simplicity, and we are just getting started.
